Just get a few basics in place: date, time, and who will set up the conference call. Setting up conference calls is easy. You can choose from several services. We use freeconference.com, and schedule all our calls online. By email, each family member receives an invitation with a telephone number connecting them to the conference call and a passcode that allows them to join the meeting. Simply follow the prompts. These services are free and easy to set up with smartphones. If you are working with an SFR counselor, that person will take care of scheduling.

Attempting to plan meetings that change from week to week can be time consuming and confusing. It’s far simpler to hold meetings at the same time every week. Making an unwavering commitment to that date and time also keeps it simple. As one family told me, “No other activity ever comes between us and our SFR meetings. Every one of us made a commitment to always be on the call.” In fact, one family member changed his departure date for international travel plans to keep from interfering with his family’s SFR meeting.

Double-check that everyone has a copy of this book, so all team members are following along and participating fully during the SFR meeting. Confirm that they have read the first four chapters. If so, and if you are working with an SFR counselor, get started. Remember, if you are proceeding without an SFR counselor, everyone needs to read the entire book first. Otherwise, you won’t know what you are doing, and it will be impossible to get the most out of the process.
